eMWAP, the electronic Mobile Water Application - Enhancing Water & Environmental Health Management.

02 February 2011

Effective water quality management in both rural and non-rural areas is crucial to public health and environmental well being. Unfortunately this is not always been easy to achieve in rural and deep rural areas due to factors such as logistical constraints (e.g. long distances between sampler & WSA and accredited laboratories).

Electronic Mobile Water Application, or eMWAP as it is referred to in short, is an innovative concept harnessing the use of appropriate field kits and mobile phones to support monitoring and management of water quality in remote areas.

Th eMWAP application works via the process of using simple field test kits, such as the H2S strip test/World Water Monitoring Day Test Kits, the results of the test are then immediately loaded onto a mobile phone which gives instant feedback to the user and to the manager/authority, who can then ensure that problems are identified and resolved without delay.  eMWAP currently captures data for pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity, H2S strip test and free chlorine residual (any determinants can be added on request).  Very excitingly, the cost of the mobile phone traffic is generously covered by Corporate Social Responsibility sponsor and partner, Viamedia.

 eMWAP helps you to:

  • Capture water quality analysis related information in remote places by means of a mobile phone
  • Receive instant feedback on your water quality even though you don’t have immediate access to a laboratory
  • Understand what issues exist by receiving direct results
  • Capture water quality results on a database without the need for internet access
  • View data on a dedicated website that gives you the number of samples collected, compliance and failures
  • Inform your sampler, manager, authorities of any immediate water quality issues
  • Know and understand the health status of rivers in your area
  • Inform municipalities of water services related issues, e.g. burst water pipes

The eMWAP technology is not restricted to water quality management or only to the capturing of water quality data. This mobile web technology (insert) also has educational benefits (via water, environmental, health related quizzes, surveys) and technical content with immediate graphical & geo-referenced outputs that can be found on the website.

Emanti Management is a partner to both the International Water Association (IWA) and World Environment Foundation (WEF) for their World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) initiatives.  Emanti and WWMD are also harnessing eMWAP for supporting of community involvement in WWMD.   WWMD is an international education programme which creates awareness amongst communities regarding the protection of their water sources. .

The main focus thus lies with the monitoring and capturing of water source results.  eMWAP assists in the capturing of these water source results, and making them immediately available on the eMWAP website in a range of user friendly outputs including google maps and graphical outputs.

eMWAP is ultimately a tool which will enable/assist  responsible parties to monitor water/health/environmental sources on a regular basis and use the information to initiate an effective and immediate response which will enhance quality of life.
